Notes On Lost - The First Two Hours

As I was watching the season premiere for the first time and again, this time actually paying more attention, there were some interesting sequences I noticed and thought were interesting. I'll recount them as the show progresses.

1. Rose is the calm one on the plane (in the flash sideways) and Jack, the one who's unnerved. The first time around, the roles were reversed. Rose clutched Jack's hand in terror as the plane hit turbulence. Now, Jack white-knuckles his arm rest.

2. Bernard's humorous reference to a "near death experience" as he returns from the bathroom, at the tail end of the plane, stands parallel to the actual event which really does almost cost him his life.

3. I wonder what the cut on Jack's neck is from?

4. Of course, Desmond being on the plane is different from actual circumstances. During this time, he was in the hatch, grizzled out, a little mad, pushing a button on the island, saving the world. Now, he is clean cut and calm. What is he reading?!

5. Desmond refers to Jack as "brother", Desmond's signature title when addressing males. Jack looks at him in a troubled manner. Could it be that he detects the alternate reality he is in? Or, is he just trying to remember that he last met Desmond while running up and down those stadium bleachers? Why can't he remember meeting Desmond in such calm circumstances which are so similar to the time they first met? Why did he remember so quickly in the hatch, under circumstances so contrasting?

6. Hey! Easter Egg! The shark has the Dharma insignia on its tail! This is just like in season 1! Could it be the same shark?

7. How many times are they gonna show Jack dropping the bomb down that shaft and Juliet detonating it?! How many times do we have to hear Juliet swear!

8. Back from the commercial break and Lost's signature close up on someone's eye. This time its Kate. And she wakes up in a tree, among its branches. This parallel's Jack's eye close up, in season 1, as he wakes up in the middle of bamboo trees and branches. For Jack, it was daytime and his vision was blurry. For Kate it is night and her hearing is impaired.

9. Kate sees both Jack and Sawyer laying on the ground and she chooses to wake up Jack.

10. Sawyer's hair is longer and he's scruffier than he really was when they crashed in season 1.

11. On the plane (alternate reality) Hurley thinks he's "the luckiest guy alive." Cut to shot of him on the island, sitting in the dirt, next to his dying friend, covered with Sayid's blood.

12. Hurley's fear of blood is remembered as he grosses out while Sayid chokes on blood. In season 1, Hurley passed out while helping Jack with the bounty hunter's wounds.

13. Jin tells Sun to button her sweater like he did in season 1.

14. Boone's back! So wait. Shannon's not with him? He said she didn't want to leave her boyfriend in Sydney.

15. Cut from a paralyzed John Locke on the plane to the Notjohn Locke on the island. He picks up a knife and wipes the blood off the blade. This is pretty much what we've seen John doing for most of the series. Only thing, the blood that the Notjohn Locke wipes off is not from a pig. It's from Jacob, a human.

16. Wonder if there's a significance to the rag that the Notjohn Locke cuts off and wipes the blade on.

17. The final season starts with wreckage as did season 1.

18. Now we see that Hurley's ability to see dead people is a gift and not a curse. Funny how he's seen himself as crazy because of this while Miles sees his ability to hear dead people as a great way to make money. Not only do they see themselves a certain way, their individual perspectives of themselves and their abilities influence the way others treat and react to them as well. Hugo ends up in the mental hospital while Miles is looked up to and respected by those he seemingly helps. Hugo's role on the island is revealed as he's the only one that Jacob can go to, to communicate with. Miles can only hear the dead if he happens to be near enough to them.

19. Jack looks for a pen to revive Charlie. In season 1 he sends Boone to find a pen as he works to revive Rose? Was it? No pen is to be found on the place while on an island, in the middle of nowhere, Boone finds a handful.

20. Charlie's life is saved while in reality, he's the one who saves everyone else's lives.

21. How in the world did Juliet not get blown to pieces when the bomb was right next to her? She's totally in one piece! Not even a visible cut! Just blood.

22. Wonder why Richard didn't enter the temple to see the Notjohn?

23. The bullet that hit the Notjohn was crushed and on the ground! Oh no... run! Too late. Smoke Monster Notjohn cometh! It's kinda freaky how black Notjohn's eyes are as he returned from his monster form. I've seen that same blackness in Ben's eyes after he's done something truly evil.

24. My first reaction when James lifted the beam off of Juliet then picked her up was, "Hey! Don't do that! You could paralyze her, if she isn't already, or make her injuries worse!" My next though was. Why isn't Jack there to assess the situation?!

25. What were Juliet's first two sentences to James?

26. James carries Juliet out of the shaft and blames Jack for her death. Cut to the plane. Charlie walks past Jack and blames him for saving his life! The guy can't win.

27. I wonder where Desmond went? Froggert's sitting next to John Locke on the plane.

28. Hmmm... Boone sat two seats over from Locke, talked to him on the flight and shook his hand as he left. Reminds me of their friendship on the island. Out of everyone on the flight those two sat next to each other with only a sleeping Froggert in between.

29. How come no one thought of taking Juliet to the temple to get healed  along with Sayid? We find out later that she probably wouldn't have been healed anyway 'cause Jacob didn't say anything about her. My theory is that the paper had a list of the names of those that Jacob knew would be there with Sayid at the temple. Juliet and Sawyer's names weren't on it.

30. Jack helps carry Sayid's dying body to the temple on the island. Cut to Jack finding out his already dead father's casket is missing. He has nothing to carry to the funeral.

31. Why does Jack just run off after Kate in the dark, in a maze of tunnels he's never been in before?!

32. Temple looks kind of Aztechie!

33.The airport is totally HNL!

34. Why couldn't Jack find his pen? 'Cause Kate stole it! Who can use the bathroom under that kind of pressure?!

35. Look at that! Blatant Honolulu Airport! They couldn't even try to make it look Mainlandie.

36. Wait Saywer! Hurley talks to dead people too!

37. I wonder what worked too James? Maybe the bomb thingy worked and when you die, you get to leave the island and be happy.

38. Where'd the flight attendant come from? How come she and the kids got to stay with The Others?

39. Have I seen that translator guy in this show before or was it in another show?

40. Hmm... there are clearly kids on the island. This was after the "incident". So, how come, later on, the women on the island can't have kids?

41. The guy's hand didn't heal when he put it in the water. I wonder if Jacob has something to do with the healing powers of the water. I also wonder if this is where Alpert took young Ben to get healed after Sayid shot him?

42. Hmm... ironic how Sayid shot Ben, who was taken to The Others to get healed and now he's the very one who's taken to The Others to get healing himself!

43. Why doesn't Kate try to get those handcuffs off and how come that guard person doesn't stop her when she goes up the escalator?

44. Oh shucky darn! The bounty hunter sees Kate!

45. Claire's back!!!!! Well, for two seconds.

46. So Notjohn is dressed in black. How did Notjohn know what John was thinking as he was being choked to death?

47. Love the light play in the scene between Notjohn and Ben. He sits in the shadow as he talks about how pathetic John was then leans into the light as he talks about John's admirable trait. Then again, he leans back into shadow when he talks about himself. The good = light, the bad = dark.

48. I wonder if Hugo is starting to accept his ability as a gift when he lets the dead Sayid know that, if he ever wants to talk, he's around?" And what's going on with Myles after Hugo's comment to Sayid? He looks like he heard and/or knows something.

49. James states that he wants Jack to suffer on that rock just like the rest of them. Cut to Jack in the airport. He's on his cell, not getting anywhere with finding his father's body. Jack seems to suffer on and off the island.

50. I wonder if Jack will help John walk again? Love that line... "Nothing is irreversible." Not true. But that's the way Jack sees it.

51. Remembering John Locke's comment in season 1 about Backgammon as Notjohn walks out of the foot. Two opponents. One dark, one light. Or, something to that effect.

52. Richard stops everyone from shooting Notjohn. Wonder if it's because it'll make him turn into the Smoke Monster?

53. Why is the Notjohn disappointed in everyone? Shot of Notjohn walking past the body of the dead John Locke. Cut to shot of dead Sayid.

54. Is Sayid really Jacob? John died so Notjohn can be resurrected. Sayid dies so Jacob can be resurrected? Hmm...
